day 2 - first english lesson!

i was actually shocked at the amount of sleep we got. it's like close to double of my usual sleeping hours lar. but of cos, that was only the first night.

i was SOOO scared of conducting our lessons lar! just thought we didn't plan sufficiently, so throughout the night i was just thinking and thinking about how best we could conduct our lessons. didn't help that i was the oldest in my sub-group, so if anything doesn't go well, it'd probably be me trying to keep everything going.

first two photos show their morning assembly. compare the number of students with any school in singapore. they had no pa system cos there wasn't a need to; subsequent few photos show how our lessons went, first teaching, then our students started playing games like "aeiou Se-TOP", and eventually when we ran out of things to do, they ended up drawing. but their drawings are damn nice; last photo shows me trying to take a photo with a girl who wasn't very willing. haha. i so am not able to connect with little kids man. i think i scare them. haha.

class photo! without peijun. oh i forgot to mention, we were supposed to teach m1, which is equivalent to our sec 1 in singapore. most of them are between the ages 12-14.

me, xinen and ellyna. dunno where peijun went. haha.

xinen and i with a bunch of our students.

she's a girl! haha for the first day everyone was wondering if this kid was a girl or a boy. we found out later that it's a she! but she's rather hyperactive. heh.

a picture of the canteen. with shiyun eating fruits. heh.

me and my large plate of rambutans.=) i didn't eat all the rambutans on the plate k! some people finished eating and threw them onto my plate. i actually ONLY ate around 7. HAHA.

before i slept that night, i was just thinking that all of us could come back to singapore to have comfortable lives after 6 days, but yet, these kids are forever stuck in their situations. we could go and have a taste of their lifestyles, but after 6 days, we will in the end still come back to our blessed homes here. they can't.

their cheerfulness really affected me as well. maybe to these children, they dun have much to hold on to, and so are more contented with their lives. in singapore, we're just bombarded with pressure from everywhere. leslie said something that struck me a lot: singaporeans control our emotions too much, to such an extent that we dun even show appreciation to our loved ones. but yet, when we went to teach the kids as complete strangers, they treated us so well. that's the difference for both cultures.
